Why do I need to pay VAT on my purchase in Mexico?

If you’re in Mexico and purchase a product sold by a creator who is also in Mexico, starting in 2026, VAT (Value Added Tax) may appear on the payment page and be added to the final purchase amount.

This charge is not a fee created by Hotmart. VAT is a tax required by Mexican tax regulations based on the Código Fiscal de la Federación, and it must be paid by the buyer when the purchase falls under the rules defined by the country’s tax authorities.

When is VAT charged?

Starting in 2026, VAT applies when a purchase involves a domestic sale in Mexico, meaning both the creator and the buyer are in the country.

In these cases, Hotmart must apply the tax on the payment page and report the information to SAT, Mexico’s tax authority.
 

Why did the final purchase amount increase?

The base price of the product does not necessarily change. What happens is that VAT is added at checkout before the purchase is completed.

As a result, the final amount shown on the payment screen may be higher than the initial price provided by the creator. Before completing your purchase, always check the total amount shown at checkout.

Does the creator receive the VAT amount?

VAT is a tax paid by the buyer and reported according to the applicable tax obligations. It does not work as an additional fee for the creator.

Can the VAT rate vary?

Yes. The VAT rate can vary between 8% and 16%, as established by law. Hotmart has no involvement in defining this percentage.

Can I request that VAT be removed?

No. When VAT applies to a purchase, it cannot be removed from checkout because it is part of the operation’s tax obligations.
