How do I enable captions and automatic translation for my course videos?

Providing an accessible learning experience is a key step in growing your digital product. By offering accessibility features, your content reaches people who are deaf or hard of hearing, supports learners who retain information better through reading, and creates opportunities to sell your course in other countries.

In this article, you'll learn how the platform's streaming system processes your video files and how to generate automatic transcripts in your course's original language. You'll also learn how to translate those captions into multiple languages and make precise edits to the text generated by artificial intelligence.

 

What should I know before enabling captions for my videos?

To use the automatic captioning and translation feature, your course must use Hotmart Player to host and stream your lessons. This streaming service optimizes video files for different internet connection speeds and provides the artificial intelligence technology responsible for converting your video's audio into text.

If your lessons are hosted on external platforms embedded through a link (such as YouTube or Vimeo), accessibility and language settings will depend entirely on the original platform. In this case, you won't be able to manage these features through your Hotmart dashboard.

 

How do I generate automatic captions for a specific lesson?

You can generate captions individually from the content editing page where the video was added:

  • Log in to your Hotmart account at: https://app.hotmart.com/login.
  • From the left-hand menu, go to Products and then select Membership Area to access the area you want.
  • In the left-hand menu, click Products.
  • Select the product you want.
  • If you want to add content to a new module, click Create module;
  • If you want to add content to an existing module, click the + icon and select Lesson.
  • Enter the page name and choose the media type.
  • After uploading the video file to the lesson and clicking Create content, the system will begin a technical optimization process. 
  • Once optimization is complete, the Caption settings option will become available. You can choose one of the following options. 
    • Generate subtitles automatically: Select your video's original language and click Create captions.
    • Upload captions: Click Submit the manual subtitles file to upload an .srt or .vtt file containing the video's transcript in the language you want captions to be available to learners. 

 

How can I generate captions in bulk for multiple videos?

If your course already includes many lessons and you'd like to save time, you can enable captions for multiple videos at once:

  1. After logging into the platform, click the nine-dot menu in the top navigation bar.
  2. Select the option Video Library.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click Library to view all video files hosted in your account.
  4. Use the checkboxes next to each file to select all the videos that should receive captions.
  5. Click the Captions icon in the top action bar.
  6. Select the original language that matches the audio of the selected videos and confirm the operation. The system will process all selected files in the background.

 

How do I translate captions into other languages?

Once captions have been generated in the video's original language, artificial intelligence expands your market opportunities by translating the text into other languages. The platform allows you to translate captions into up to three additional languages per video.

To use this feature, the original captions must already exist. In the same media management section for the lesson or Video Library, you'll find the option to add translations. 

After selecting your target languages (such as English, Spanish, or French), the system automatically translates the existing captions while preserving their original timing with the audio. This allows you to create offers for audiences in other countries without having to re-record your lessons.

 

How can I review and edit the text generated by artificial intelligence?

Since both the original transcript and its translations are generated automatically, it's normal for small inconsistencies to occur, such as grammar issues, regional accent interpretation, or industry-specific terminology. That's why we recommend reviewing the captions before publishing your lesson.

To make edits, click the Review button next to the language you want to edit. The platform opens an interactive editor that displays the video alongside a timeline divided into time segments. You can click directly on the sentence you want to change, edit the text, and adjust its display timing if needed.

Important: When editing captions manually, avoid making major changes to the length of sentences within short time segments. Long edits may disrupt the learner's reading pace or cause captions to become out of sync with the video's audio.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

I accidentally deleted my video's original captions. How can I restore them?

The artificial intelligence tool analyzes the video's audio and automatically generates the caption file only once for each uploaded video. If you manually delete the original caption file generated by the system, the automatic caption generation option will no longer be available for that same media file. 

To resolve this situation, you have two options:

  • Manual upload: If you previously downloaded the caption file, simply upload the same .srt (or another compatible format) from the video's management section.
  • Upload the video again: If you don't have the caption file saved, you'll need to upload the video again to the lesson or Video Library. The new file will go through the standard technical optimization process, and automatic caption generation will be available again.
Can my learners customize the appearance of captions in the mobile app?

At the moment, advanced caption appearance settings—such as changing text color, font size, and the opacity of the black background—are available exclusively in the web browser version

When content is viewed through the Hotmart mobile app, the video player uses a standard layout optimized for smaller screens. In the app, learners can only turn captions on or off.
